RESCUE & REHAB
Misunderstood and Mistreated
WHY RESCUE?
WHY RESCUE?
India’s native breed, the “Indian dog,” is misunderstood as wild or dangerous despite its intelligence and lovable personality. This discrimination carries over to the adoption market. After just 65 days of age, or with any history of injury, chances of adoption plummet to zero. With that in mind, SAFI’s focus is not on the conventional rehab-and-adopt model familiar to Westerners, but on giving the best chance of survival on their own.

Helping the Helpless
HELPING THE ANIMALS NO ONE ELSE WILL
On average SAFI rescues 40 dogs and cats a month. We want to be the change India’s innocent lives desperately deserve and need, giving these street animals an opportunity, maybe the only opportunity they ever meet, to live happily and healthy lives, even when other organizations may turn them away.
OUR MODEL
For now, the best chance for India’s stray animals is to give them the care they need to fend for themselves on the street. SAFI uses the RRSR approach—Rescue, Rehab, Sterilize and Release—to give Indian dogs the best chance to fend for themselves in the current climate. This allows us to give many more animals what they need without overwhelming the nation’s current shelter infrastructure, while our public education and abuse prevention arm works to build a society better suited to the needs of these animals. Those animals whose age or medical issues render them unable to survive on the streets receive a forever home in a local sanctuary.
OUR SUCCESSFUL RESCUES
Shelter-Based Partnerships
SUPPORTING INDIA’S
RESCUE EFFORTS
SAFI works alongside local shelters in Hyderabad, India to:
- Develop and train their own animal rescue teams, as India has limited government-run animal control organizations
- Coordinate and fund rescue operations, including travel and medical expenses
- Expand shelter structures to maximize space efficiency so shelters can safely house as many rescues as possible

How We Rescue
RRSR APPROACH
SAFI’s partnered shelters use the RRNR approach – Rescue, Rehabilitate, Sterilize, and Release. We are strictly a no-kill organization.
As much as we would love to be able to provide forever homes to each and every rescue we help, we simply don’t have the resources or space, especially with our priority spaces being dedicated to the paralyzed, disabled or elderly rescues we find. With your help, we can change that.
OUR RESCUE MODEL
WE NEED YOUR HELP
WE NEED YOUR HELP
Western donors are in a unique position to help. Due to a high dollar-to-rupee exchange rate, as little as $5 can feed an animal for a week, and $20 can cover its entire monthly needs. Any amount you can spare will make a huge difference for India’s animals.
