Our organization started out small, but quickly grew and evolved into the thriving home for animals it is today.
The founder was deeply moved by the suffering of street animals.
Founder Ujwala experienced street dog abuse for the first time—a shocking and upsetting event that left her feeling powerless and alone. She didn’t know how to help or how to speak up against such cruelty.
Founder started fostering shelter animals
Ujwala’s daughter has always wanted a dog, but Ujwala wasn’t sure she was ready for the commitment. So instead, she decided to start fostering dogs from rural shelters in Florida, USA.
SAFI officially launched
Ujwala witnessed firsthand the abuse that street animals face on a daily basis during her trips to India. Determined to make a difference in their lives, she decided to start an organization dedicated to helping these animals.
First Shelter Built
SAFI built its first shelter with four recovery rooms and 25 kennels, thoughtfully designed to house up to 50 dogs surrounded by a compound wall. We launched vital programs including spay/neuter surgeries, emergency medical care, and the long-term housing of disabled dogs.
Shelter Expanded
In 2022, we expanded our shelter to accommodate 100 animals and added a full-time veterinarian and cruelty officer to enhance medical care and protect animals from abuse.
Clinic Opening
In 2023, we opened our own veterinary clinic, fully equipped with surgical tools, operating tables, lights, and a CBC machine to provide advanced medical care on-site.
Vet & Cruelty Expansion
In 2024, we added a second veterinarian, expanded our cruelty prevention program, and upgraded our clinic with additional medical equipment to better serve animals in need.
